Green tea extract (L-theanine)

Green Tea Extract Benefits: Focus, Calm & Antioxidant Support

What it is

Green tea extract is derived from the leaves of Camellia sinensis and contains a range of bioactive compounds, most notably catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), as well as the unique amino acid L-theanine. Green tea has been consumed for centuries both as a beverage and as a traditional tonic, and modern extracts are used to concentrate its antioxidant and neuroactive compounds [1].

L-theanine is naturally found almost exclusively in tea leaves and is especially valued for its ability to promote a calm but alert mental state.

How it works in the body

Green tea catechins, particularly EGCG, act as polyphenolic antioxidants that can influence oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, and metabolic pathways. They have been studied for effects on cardiovascular health, fat oxidation, and cellular protection [2].

L-theanine crosses the blood–brain barrier and appears to influence neurotransmitters including GABA, dopamine, and serotonin, while also increasing alpha-wave activity in the brain, which is associated with a state of relaxed attentiveness [3]. When combined with caffeine, L-theanine may help improve attention and focus while reducing the jitteriness sometimes associated with stimulant use [4].

Primary benefits

• Supports calm focus and mental clarity
• Provides antioxidant support
• May support metabolic and cardiovascular health

Typical supplemental range

L-theanine: 100–200 mg per serving
Green tea extract: commonly standardized to catechin or EGCG content, often 250–500 mg daily

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated. Highly concentrated green tea extracts should be used carefully, especially when taken fasting.

Did you know?

L-theanine is one reason why tea often feels calming and focusing at the same time, unlike the more abrupt stimulation associated with coffee.
