Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)

What it is
Vitamin B6 refers to a group of related compounds, including pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine, which are converted in the body to the active form pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP). It is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, and red blood cell formation [1].

Vitamin B6 is found in foods such as poultry, fish, whole grains, bananas, and legumes, and plays a key role in both metabolic and neurological processes.

How it works in the body
Vitamin B6 functions primarily as a coenzyme (PLP) in over 100 enzymatic reactions, many of which are involved in amino acid metabolism and protein utilization [2].

It is essential for the synthesis of key neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, which are involved in mood regulation, cognitive function, and nervous system balance.

Vitamin B6 also plays a central role in homocysteine metabolism, working alongside vitamins B12 and folate to help convert homocysteine into other compounds. This process is important for cardiovascular and metabolic health.

In addition, B6 contributes to heme synthesis, supporting red blood cell production, and plays a role in immune function through its involvement in lymphocyte activity and cytokine production [2].

Primary benefits
• Supports neurotransmitter production and mood regulation
• Supports homocysteine metabolism
• Supports immune function
• Supports red blood cell formation

Typical intake (RDA)
• Adults (19–50): 1.3 mg/day
• Men (51+): 1.7 mg/day
• Women (51+): 1.5 mg/day

Typical supplemental range
2–25 mg daily for general support

Safety notes
Generally safe at recommended doses. Very high doses over prolonged periods may lead to sensory neuropathy, so long-term high-dose use should be monitored.

Did you know?
Vitamin B6 is involved in the synthesis of melatonin, linking it indirectly to sleep regulation and circadian rhythm balance.
