Echinacea
A traditional immune-support herb that helps modulate immune responses and may support the body during periods of increased immune demand.
Ingredient list
Chromium picolinate is a supplemental form of the trace mineral chromium in which chromium is bound to picolinic acid, a compound that improves the mineral’s absorption. Chromium is naturally present in small amounts in foods such as whole grains, meats, nuts, and some vegetables. It is considered an essential trace element because of its role in maintaining normal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins [1].
Interest in chromium supplementation increased in the late twentieth century when researchers discovered that chromium appears to enhance the activity of insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose levels. Chromium picolinate became one of the most commonly used supplemental forms because the picolinate ligand improves stability and absorption compared with certain other chromium salts [2].
Chromium participates in glucose metabolism through its interaction with insulin signaling pathways. When insulin binds to receptors on the surface of cells, chromium appears to enhance the receptor’s activity and improve the transport of glucose from the bloodstream into cells [3].
This effect is thought to involve a low-molecular-weight chromium-binding substance sometimes referred to as chromodulin, which may amplify insulin receptor activity. By improving insulin sensitivity, chromium may contribute to more stable blood glucose regulation and improved carbohydrate metabolism [4].
Clinical studies investigating chromium supplementation have primarily focused on metabolic health. Some research suggests that chromium picolinate may modestly improve glycemic control in individuals with impaired glucose metabolism or type 2 diabetes, although results are mixed and appear to depend on baseline chromium status and metabolic health [5].
• Supports normal blood glucose metabolism
• May support insulin sensitivity
• Supports macronutrient metabolism
200–1000 µg per day.
Chromium picolinate is generally well tolerated at typical doses. Extremely high doses should be avoided.
Chromium deficiency was first identified in hospital patients receiving intravenous nutrition when they developed severe glucose intolerance until chromium was added to their nutrient formula.
