Relax & fast sleep

Four ingredients for the stretches when your data says you are wound up and sleep is slow to come. The fast part is the melatonin, and only the melatonin: the valerian needs two to four weeks of steady use to do what it does, and we would rather tell you that than let the name promise it.

WHAT IS IN IT

Four actives. Nothing else.

These are the reference doses of the formula. Your device pours them in steps of 0.2 ml, so what you actually take on a given night can sit below the reference when your data does not call for the full dose.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

Two of these four have an authorised claim. Two do not.

In the EU, only a short list of health claims is authorised, and the rest of the register sits on hold. We would rather show you which of our ingredients are on that list and which are not than write a sentence that sounds the same for all four.

Melatonin

AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

“Melatonin helps to reduce the time taken to fall asleep.”

That is the wording on file in the EU register, under Regulation (EU) 1170/2011, and it is also listed in Regulation (EU) 432/2012. The claim only holds at 1 mg taken shortly before going to bed, which is the full dose of this formula and the reason it is served 30 minutes before sleep. On a night the device pours less than the full dose, you get less than 1 mg, and the claim does not cover that night.

GABA

NO AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

Nothing. There is no authorised EU claim for GABA, so we do not attribute an effect to it.

GABA is the brain's main calming messenger, but taken by mouth very little of it crosses into the brain in healthy adults, and the published results against placebo are mixed and modest. It is here as a companion to the magnesium and the valerian, not as the reason this formula works. One number we owe you: the reviews on file consider the fermented form safe up to 200 mg a day, and this formula carries 500 mg. No upper limit has been set for GABA, and our own ceiling on file is 800 mg a day, but the 500 mg is above the figure those reviews used and is with our clinical team. That is a reason to include it, not a permission to promise anything.

Magnesium

AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

“Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system.” “Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function.”

Regulation (EU) 432/2012, which only allows these claims on a product that is at least a source of magnesium under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. This formula carries 200 mg, 53% of the NRV. The bisglycinate form is used because it is gentle on the gut, not for a stronger claim.

Valerian

ON HOLD IN THE EU REGISTER

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

Nothing yet. Botanical claims are suspended pending review.

The EMA monograph recognises valerian root for mild nervous tension and sleep disorders, at 400–600 mg of dry extract. It also says two things we pass on as they are: it is not suitable for acute use, and it needs two to four weeks of continued use for its optimal effect. On a single night, the valerian is not what makes this formula fast.

HOW IT IS POURED

Fourteen pulses. Not always fourteen.

The full dose of this formula is 2.8 ml, which the device serves as fourteen pulses of 0.2 ml. On a night your band says you need less, it pours less and tells you why. One thing changes when it does: below the full dose the melatonin drops under 1 mg, and the authorised claim no longer applies to that night.

NIGHT, 30 MIN BEFORE SLEEP

Why then

The melatonin claim only holds at 1 mg taken shortly before going to bed. The formula is night-only for the same reason: melatonin taken in the morning or afternoon pulls against your rhythm instead of with it.

AWAY FROM YOUR MEAL

Why not with dinner

Fat in a meal can delay the absorption of melatonin by around three hours, which pushes it past the moment you need it. Other VION formulas ride on your dinner on purpose. This one does not.

45 ML CARTRIDGE

How long it lasts

At the full 2.8 ml it is 16 nights. At a partial pour it lasts longer, so the app orders your refill from what you actually took.

HOW IT ENTERS YOUR PLAN

A BOOST formula is not assigned. It is suggested.

BOOST is the part of your plan that moves. It does not come out of your questionnaire but out of your wearable, when your numbers leave your band for long enough to be more than one bad night, and it runs as a set course rather than indefinitely.

  1. 01

It is suggested when your data drifts

Three signals can bring it in: under six hours of sleep on a five-day average, HRV below 30 on a seven-day average, or a stress score above 65 on a seven-day average. One short night is not enough.

  2. 02

    Your profile is checked first

Before it is ever offered, your answers are checked against its exclusions. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on an anticoagulant or living with lupus, it is not suggested at all.

  3. 03

It runs as a course of up to 28 days

The valerian needs two to four weeks of continued use for its optimal effect, so this is a course, not a one-off. Inside it, only the amount moves, night by night, in 0.2 ml steps. The recipe itself does not change.

  4. 04

At two weeks, it is reviewed

If your sleep or tension has not improved, or has got worse, after two weeks of use, the advice on file is to see a doctor or a pharmacist, and we pass it on. A course can be repeated later; no fixed break between courses is documented.

SAFETY AND INTERACTIONS

What it never shares a night with.

Every pair of ingredients in our library is checked against the others before a plan is built. Inside this formula, five of its six pairs are documented, all as complementary; the magnesium and valerian pair is not documented yet. This is what the check rules out.

NEVER TOGETHER

Sleep & circadian rhythm

The CORE sleep formula also carries 1 mg of melatonin and 200 mg of magnesium. Two formulas on the same night would carry 2 mg of melatonin, above the limit on file, and 400 mg of magnesium, above the 250 mg upper limit for supplemental magnesium. So the engine never serves both on the same night. The same magnesium limit applies to any other formula in your plan that carries it.

SPLIT ACROSS WINDOWS

Pre-workout

That formula carries 150 mg of caffeine and is never taken after 4 pm. A stimulant and a sedative are never served within eight hours of each other, so on a late training day the engine keeps the two apart or leaves one out.

TALK TO A DOCTOR FIRST

Not for everyone

Not for pregnancy or breastfeeding, lupus or other autoimmune conditions, advanced kidney disease, myasthenia gravis (high doses of magnesium are contraindicated there), or anyone on anticoagulants such as warfarin. Not for children under 12; under 18, only on a doctor's prescription. Never with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sleeping pills, barbiturates, opioids or other sedatives, including sedating antipsychotics and first-generation antihistamines, and never with gabapentin, pregabalin or St John's wort. Ask a doctor first if you have milder kidney disease — below a GFR of 30, supplemental magnesium is not for you without medical supervision — liver disease, a heart rhythm problem such as AV block, epilepsy or diabetes, if you have or have had a hormone-dependent cancer or are having cancer treatment, or if you take antidiabetics, immunosuppressants, beta-blockers, blood pressure medication, fluvoxamine, ciprofloxacin, digoxin, anti-epileptic medicines or the contraceptive pill. Keep quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after it, levothyroxine at least 4 hours apart, and bisphosphonates and tetracyclines at least 2 hours apart. Have your magnesium checked if you have taken a proton pump inhibitor for more than three months. It causes drowsiness: do not drive or use machinery for 4–5 hours after it. Stop it at least two weeks before surgery, and see a doctor if you need it for more than four weeks or nothing has improved after two. The app asks before it ever suggests this one.

WHAT IS NOT PROVEN YET

This formula has not completed clinical validation. Its four ingredients rest on published work, an EMA monograph and, in two cases, an authorised EU claim, but the combination itself has not been tested by us in a trial. The evidence behind the GABA is the weakest of the four, and we say so. When the trial is done, the result goes on this page, whatever it says.

YOU DO NOT PICK YOUR FORMULAS

Your data does.

The questionnaire and your first weeks of data decide which six of the 29 end up in your device. This page exists so you can read what one of them is before that happens.
