Functional thyroid

Four ingredients for when your blood test shows a TSH drifting up with no sign of autoimmunity: selenium and iodine, both with an authorised EU claim for normal thyroid function, plus vitamin D3 and zinc. One pulse a morning, before food, for 12 weeks. It ends with a new test, not with a promise.

WHAT IS IN IT

Four actives. Nothing else.

These are the reference doses of the formula, at the full 0.2 ml. That is a single pulse, the smallest step your device can serve, so this formula has no partial dose: it is poured whole or not at all.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

All four have an authorised claim. Only two are about your thyroid.

In the EU, only a short list of health claims is authorised. Selenium and iodine are on it for normal thyroid function. Vitamin D and zinc are on it too, but for other things, and none of their claims mentions the thyroid. None of these claims says anything about your TSH. The claims are what we are allowed to say. Your blood test is the reason this formula is on your plan.

Selenium

AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

“Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function.”

Regulation (EU) 432/2012, on a product that is at least a source of selenium, which means 15% of the NRV per dose. 100 µg is 182%. It is under the EFSA upper limit of 255 µg a day and at the 100 µg we set as the most for any single dose, but above the 45 µg the German BfR suggests for a supplement. Our file calls selenium a mineral with a narrow margin, so the engine counts it across your whole plan.

Reg. 432/2012 · EFSA Journal 2009;7(9):1220 · UL 255 µg · 15 sources on file

Iodine

AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

“Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and to normal thyroid function.”

Regulation (EU) 432/2012, on a product that is at least a source of iodine. 150 µg is exactly 100% of the NRV and the EFSA reference intake for adults. It is a quarter of the EFSA upper limit of 600 µg a day, but above the 100 µg the German BfR suggests for a supplement. Of our four files, the iodine one is the thinnest, and its full review is still pending.

Vitamin D3

AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

“Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.”

Regulation (EU) 432/2012, on a product that is at least a source of vitamin D. The NRV is only 5 µg, so 25 µg reads as 500%. It is a quarter of the EFSA upper limit of 100 µg a day, though above the 20 µg the German BfR suggests for a supplement. None of its authorised claims is about the thyroid, and our file documents no thyroid role for it, so we do not claim one.

Reg. 432/2012 · NRV 5 µg · UL 100 µg · 12 sources on file

Zinc

AUTHORISED CLAIM

WHAT WE ARE ALLOWED TO SAY

“Zinc contributes to normal protein synthesis.”

Regulation (EU) 432/2012, on a product that is at least a source of zinc. 10 mg is exactly 100% of the NRV, as bisglycinate, the form our file prefers for how well it is tolerated. This is the claim the formula is filed under, and it is not about the thyroid: none of the zinc claims on file is. The EFSA upper limit is 25 mg a day with your diet included; the German BfR suggests 6.5 mg for a supplement, which this formula passes.

HOW IT IS POURED

One pulse. Set by your blood test, not by last night.

The full dose of this formula is 0.2 ml, which is a single pulse, the smallest step the device can serve. So there is nothing to trim: your band cannot pour part of one pulse, and on a morning this formula is served, it is served whole. The plan on file is the full dose every morning for 12 weeks, then a new TSH and free T4 test.

TONIGHT'S POUR

1
0.2 ml of 0.2 mlone pulse, set by your blood test

MORNING, BEFORE BREAKFAST

Why then

Our file puts this formula in the morning to line up with the daily rhythm of TSH, the marker it answers to. If you take levothyroxine, keep at least 4 hours between the two. Our selenium file calls that a theoretical precaution on which opinion varies, and we follow it anyway.

ON AN EMPTY STOMACH

Why before food

Zinc is absorbed better away from meals, and a meal rich in cereals or pulses can halve what you take in. Dairy in the same dose competes with it too. There is a trade-off: vitamin D3 dissolves in fat and absorbs better with a meal, and selenium sits easier on the stomach with food. The formula file still puts this one before food.

45 ML CARTRIDGE

How long it lasts

At 0.2 ml a morning it is up to 225 mornings. One 12-week cycle is 84, so a single cartridge covers the whole cycle.

HOW IT ENTERS YOUR PLAN

An ADAPT formula starts with a blood test. It ends with another.

ADAPT is the part of your plan that follows your bloodwork. It goes in when a result calls for it, runs for a fixed period at a fixed dose, and comes out when a new test says so.

  1. 01

It starts with a blood result

It is suggested when your TSH comes back above 2.5 mU/L, or your free T4 sits low inside its range. A TSH of 2.5 to 4.0 is still within the 0.4–4.0 normal range in our biomarker library, but above the 1.0–2.5 we treat as optimal. It is for a thyroid with no sign of autoimmunity, and our file asks for a clinician to confirm it before it is switched on.

  2. 02

    It runs for 12 weeks

84 days at the full 0.2 ml every morning, then a new TSH and free T4 test. Nothing about this formula moves inside that window.

  3. 03

The next test decides what follows

If your TSH is back between 0.5 and 2.5 mU/L, the range our plan checks against, this formula comes out and Energy & vitality takes over, or simply your diet with iodised salt. If your TPO antibodies come back positive, a sign of possible Hashimoto's, you move to Autoimmune thyroid, with 200 µg of selenium. That formula is still in development.

  4. 04

No fixed pause, no yearly cap

Our file sets no pause before what comes next: at these doses, selenium and iodine stay under their EFSA upper limits of 255 µg and 600 µg a day, which is what allows continuous use. A cycle can be repeated. We looked for a yearly limit in EFSA, NIH, ANSES and the thyroid guidelines and found none, so how many cycles you get depends on your TSH, test by test.

SAFETY AND INTERACTIONS

What it never shares a morning with.

Every pair of ingredients in our library is checked against the others before a plan is built. Inside this formula, two of the six pairs are documented, both as complementary: selenium with zinc, at doses up to the 100 µg and 15 mg this formula stays within, and vitamin D3 with zinc. Our selenium file describes selenium with iodine as a pair to formulate together for the thyroid, but it is not yet a documented pair, and neither are the other three. This is what the check rules out.

ONE OR THE OTHER

Autoimmune thyroid

That formula carries 200 µg of selenium. With the 100 µg here you would reach 300 µg, past the EFSA upper limit of 255 µg a day and past the 200 µg a day we allow across all formulas. If your TPO antibodies come back positive, you move from this formula to that one. You never take both.

UPPER LIMIT TRACKED

Low testosterone · Acute immunity · Cold symptom support

Each carries 15 mg of zinc. With the 10 mg here you would reach 25 mg, the EFSA upper limit for zinc, and that limit counts your diet too. The engine adds up zinc, selenium and vitamin D3 across every formula and blocks any addition that would take a total to its limit. And if any mix of formulas brings your zinc to 15 mg a day or more, it adds at least 1 mg of copper or blocks the combination. Because this formula carries vitamin D3, the engine also looks to put vitamin K2 and magnesium in the same stack, elsewhere in your plan.

TALK TO A DOCTOR FIRST

Not for everyone

Ruled out if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; if you have overt hyperthyroidism or thyroid nodules still being investigated; if you have liver disease; if you take a vitamin K antagonist such as warfarin or acenocoumarol; if you have or have had selenium toxicity (selenosis), or a high blood selenium (above 122 µg/L) with no clinical reason for it; or if you are hypersensitive to selenium or iodine. Positive TPO antibodies move you to Autoimmune thyroid instead. Talk to a doctor first if you have Hashimoto's or Graves' disease; type 2 diabetes with a high selenium level; if you are under 18, where the upper limits are lower; if you have cancer or are in cancer treatment; sarcoidosis, lymphoma, primary hyperparathyroidism or granulomatous tuberculosis; high blood calcium or active calcium kidney stones; advanced kidney disease; haemochromatosis, Menkes disease or a lost sense of smell; or if you take other anticoagulants such as apixaban or dabigatran, antiplatelets, levothyroxine (4 hours apart), statins, niacin, platinum chemotherapy such as cisplatin, immunosuppressants, oral contraceptives, lithium, thiazide diuretics, ACE inhibitors, steroids, orlistat, anti-epileptics (phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine), digoxin, antacids, antithyroid drugs such as methimazole, tetracycline antibiotics, penicillamine or bisphosphonates (at least 2 hours apart), or quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (take them at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after this formula). Stop and see a doctor if you notice signs of liver trouble: yellowing skin or eyes, unusual tiredness, abdominal pain or dark urine. Keep it at least 2 hours from iron supplements of 25 mg or more, calcium of 500 mg or more, and strong coffee or tea. Never use nasal zinc products. Do not exceed the daily dose. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet. Keep out of the reach of young children. Do not exceed 600 µg of iodine a day from all sources, the EFSA upper limit. Its vitamin D3 is not vegan. The app asks before it ever assigns this one.

WHAT IS NOT PROVEN YET

This formula has not completed clinical validation. Selenium and iodine carry authorised EU claims for normal thyroid function, but none of those claims is about your TSH, and the 12-week plan has not been tested by us in a trial. Our file does not yet document why vitamin D3 is in it, and our iodine file is still waiting for its full review. When the plan is tested, the result goes on this page, whatever it says.
